How to Read a Supplement Label Like a Sceptic

Four steps that take ninety seconds and will tell you more than an hour of reading the sales page.

The short answer

Evaluate any supplement label in four steps: find the printed milligram amount for each active, look up the dose used in research for that ingredient, divide to see what fraction of a studied dose you are getting, and check that the research measured the outcome being marketed. Ingredients below roughly a third of the studied dose, or studied for a different outcome, should be discounted from your decision.

Why the label beats the sales page

Everything on a supplement sales page is written to persuade. The supplement facts panel is written to comply with regulation. That difference makes the panel the only part of the page worth trusting, and learning to read it properly is the single most valuable skill in this category.

It takes about ninety seconds per product once you know the method.

Step one: find the amount

For each active ingredient, look for a milligram or microgram figure. Three things you might find:

A printed amount. Good. You can evaluate this.

No amount at all. The ingredient is named with no quantity. You cannot evaluate it. This is more common than you would expect, particularly for botanicals, and it is not a technicality — an ingredient without an amount could be a research dose or a pinch, and the label reads identically either way.

A proprietary blend total. Several ingredients grouped under one combined figure. You know the total but not the split, and by convention ingredients are listed in descending order by weight — so the last-listed ingredient could be a trace.

Step two: find the research dose

Look up what studies on that ingredient actually used. This is easier than it sounds — searching the ingredient name alongside "randomised controlled trial" or checking a reputable reference database will usually give you a range within a couple of minutes.

Write down the range, not a single number. Most ingredients have been studied across a spread, and the spread itself is informative. An ingredient studied at 80 to 720 mg has less consensus behind it than one studied consistently at 300 mg.

Step three: divide

Compare what is in the capsule to what the research used.

A rough working rule: if a product delivers less than about a third of the studied dose, treat that ingredient as decoration rather than a functional component. Below ten percent, cross it out entirely.

The clearest illustration in the cognitive category is beta-alanine. Research uses 4,000 to 6,000 mg daily. Formulas sometimes list it at 40 mg. That is roughly one percent — not a smaller version of the effect, but below the threshold where a dose-response relationship meaningfully begins.

Step four: check the outcome matches

This step catches things the first three miss, and almost nobody does it.

An ingredient can be present at a full research dose and still be irrelevant to what the product is being sold for, because the research measured something else. Beta-alanine's evidence concerns exercise capacity. L-arginine's evidence sits largely in cardiovascular and exercise performance. Honey's published research concerns wound care and cough suppression.

When any of those appear in a formula marketed for memory, the ingredient is real, the research is real, and the connection is inferred. Ask yourself: did a study measure the thing this product promises?

Reading the standardisation line

For botanicals, the milligram figure alone is insufficient. What matters is standardisation — the stated percentage of the compounds believed to be active.

  • Bacopa Monnieri — look for a bacoside percentage.
  • Ginkgo Biloba — look for flavone glycoside and terpene lactone percentages.
  • Curcumin — look for curcuminoid percentage.

Three hundred milligrams of a standardised extract and three hundred milligrams of ground leaf powder are entirely different products. A label stating only the plant name is telling you the genus and nothing else.

Salt and bound forms

A detail that quietly reduces what you get. When an ingredient is listed as a salt or bound form, part of the stated weight is the counter-ion, not the active compound.

Citrulline malate in a 2:1 preparation is roughly two-thirds citrulline. Magnesium oxide is a small fraction elemental magnesium by weight. Where a label says "providing X mg of elemental Y," that is a sign of good practice.

The five-line checklist

  1. Is an amount printed for every active? If not, note which.
  2. How does each amount compare with the research dose?
  3. Are botanicals standardised, and to what?
  4. Does the research measure the marketed outcome?
  5. After crossing out everything below a third of a studied dose, does what remains justify the price?

That last question is the one that matters. Almost every formula has one or two token ingredients — that is a normal formulation compromise given finite capsule space. What you are looking for is whether the survivors justify the cost. Where most of the panel gets crossed out, you have your answer.

Frequently asked

What does 'Daily Value not established' mean?

It means no official Daily Value has been set for that substance, which is normal for botanicals, amino acids and most non-vitamin ingredients. It is not a warning and it says nothing about quality or dose — it simply means there is no regulatory reference amount to express a percentage against.

Why do some labels not list milligram amounts?

Regulations require ingredients to be listed, but the presentation allows proprietary blends where individual amounts are grouped into one total. Some labels also list ingredients without amounts entirely. The commercial motivation is usually to avoid revealing formulation details — or to avoid revealing that some amounts are small.
